Concierge Midwifery
Care for those planning a hospital birth while still seeking the intimate, personalized support of community midwives.
Home birth is a great option for individuals interested in birthing outside the hospital system, but it may not be right for everyone. If you plan on birthing in a hospital, we offer comprehensive concierge midwifery to complement your obstetric care.

This service offers personalized, compassionate midwifery care paired with the resources of a hospital, ensuring your birth plan and preferences are honored while maintaining safety and comfort throughout your journey.
Who is it for?
There are many reasons why a birthing person may plan to have their baby in the hospital but choose prenatal and postpartum care outside the traditional medical model. This option might be right for you if:
You feel safest giving birth in a hospital but want longer appointments focusing on emotional support and education in addition to your medical well-being.
Your insurance covers prenatal and postpartum care but does not cover a home birth.
You want an epidural during labor.
There is an indication that a hospital birth will be the safest option for you or your baby.

Concierge midwifery and traditional OB care differ significantly in their approach to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care, with concierge midwifery offering a more personalized, holistic, and flexible experience. Here’s a breakdown of the key differences:
1. Length and Depth of Prenatal and Postpartum Visits
Concierge Midwifery: In concierge midwifery, prenatal and postpartum visits typically last around 60 minutes or more. These longer appointments allow for an in-depth discussion of not only physical health but also emotional, mental, and lifestyle aspects of pregnancy and postpartum recovery. The extended time allows for detailed birth planning, nutritional counseling, and personalized advice, creating a holistic approach to care. The midwives gets to know you on a deeper level, understanding your specific needs and preferences.
Traditional OB Care: In traditional OB care, prenatal and postpartum visits are often shorter, typically around 10-15 minutes. The focus is more on the medical aspects of care—monitoring physical health, checking vital signs, and addressing immediate concerns. Due to time constraints and the volume of patients, there may be less opportunity to discuss emotional well-being, birth preferences, or lifestyle factors in-depth.
2. Continuity of Care and Integration with Hospital Providers
Concierge Midwifery: Concierge midwives typically offer continuity of care, which means the same small team of midwives provide care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Even if you are planning a hospital birth, concierge midwives can integrate with hospital providers, ensuring that your midwife is involved in your care plan, attending appointments with hospital providers when needed, and advocating for your preferences. This integration allows for seamless collaboration between your midwife and hospital staff, balancing medical safety with personalized care.
Traditional OB Care: In traditional OB care, patients often see whichever doctor or healthcare provider is available for appointments. The person who manages your prenatal care may not be the same doctor attending your delivery, depending on the hospital’s staffing at the time. Continuity of care is less emphasized, and you may encounter different providers throughout your pregnancy and at delivery, leading to potential gaps in communication or understanding of your preferences.
3. Referral Networks and Collaboration
Concierge Midwifery: Concierge midwives often have well-established referral networks, connecting clients with a range of holistic and medical professionals, including doulas, chiropractors, acupuncturists, lactation consultants, and specialists. We actively coordinate your care, ensuring that any additional services you require align with your personalized care plan.
Traditional OB Care: While traditional OBs may refer you to specialists, the referrals are often limited to medical professionals within their network. There may be less emphasis on alternative or holistic care options unless specifically requested by the patient. OBs are primarily focused on the medical management of pregnancy and birth, so their referral networks might not be as expansive in complementary care areas.
4. Optional Birth Support
Concierge Midwifery: One of the key features of concierge midwifery is the option for your midwife to be present for the birth, even in a hospital setting. If you choose this option, your midwife acts as a supportive presence throughout labor and delivery, often in a doula-like role, while hospital staff manages the clinical aspects. This allows you to have a familiar, trusted person by your side who understands your birth plan and can advocate for your preferences during labor.
Traditional OB Care: In traditional OB care, the attending physician or OB team typically manages the clinical aspects of the birth. While OBs can be supportive of your preferences, they are often managing multiple patients and emergencies simultaneously. Support during labor may come from hospital nurses rather than the OB, and if you desire continuous emotional or physical support, you may need to hire a doula separately.
5. Personalized Care Plans and Flexibility
Concierge Midwifery: Concierge midwifery offers the flexibility to tailor every aspect of your care to your unique needs. Your midwife works with you to create a personalized care package that can include prenatal education, birth planning, postpartum support, lactation guidance, and more. This high level of customization extends to birth preferences, including natural birth, medical interventions, and postpartum recovery plans. Flexibility in scheduling and even home visits are common in this model, providing convenience and reducing stress for clients.
Traditional OB Care: In traditional OB care, care plans are generally standardized based on medical protocols and guidelines. While OBs will listen to and respect your preferences, the structure of the care is typically more rigid, with less opportunity for customization or extended discussions. Scheduling flexibility may also be limited due to the busy nature of the practice.
6. Emotional and Holistic Support
Concierge Midwifery: Emotional and holistic support is a cornerstone of concierge midwifery. Midwives take the time to listen to your concerns, answer all questions thoroughly, and provide guidance on not just physical but emotional and psychological aspects of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This model encourages empowerment, informed decision-making, and a more individualized care experience.
Traditional OB Care: Traditional OB care is focused more on clinical and medical management. While emotional support may be offered, the shorter visits and more medicalized approach often leave less room for exploring holistic and emotional aspects of care.
Concierge midwifery for planned hospital births offers a highly personalized, continuous care experience that integrates the best of holistic midwifery with the safety of hospital-based medicine. In contrast, traditional OB care focuses on the medical management of pregnancy and birth, often with shorter, less personalized visits. Families choosing concierge midwifery receive a tailored care package, integration with hospital providers, and the option for birth support, providing a more comprehensive and intimate approach to care than the traditional model allows.
